| DRINKS • Cafe Sluyswacht (Centrum) (http://www.sluyswacht.nl/, Jodenbreestraat 1) Opposite the Rembrandt house, this small sluice house has a nice terrace at the back facing one of the most beautiful canals in Amsterdam. • Villa Zeezicht (Centrum) (Torensteeg 7) Nice big terrace at the bridge over the Singel, famous for its homemade apple pie. • Brouwerij het IJ (Centrum) (www.brouwerijhetij.nl, Funenkade 7) Small brewery with great cafe and terrace, serving delicious homebrewn Amsterdam beers. Open daily till 20:00 h. The brewery gives regular guided tours that must be booked in advance, they are usually held on Frinday, Saturday and Sunday between 15.00 en 16.00, so a nice idea to end your EARLI week with a tour and a beer afterwards... |
ACTIVITIES • Relaxing in one of Amsterdams great city parks. Besides the famous Vondelpark (with its open air theater with many performancse, e.g. august 23 at 15.00 the urban rock formation Leona playing), the Oosterpark is known for its big grass lawn, hosting people of all ages and nationalities. Or sit under a tree at the canal bank in the small Wertheimpark, watching the big ships manoeuvre through the small canal. • De Hortus (Centrum) (http://www.hortus-botanicus.nl/, Plantage Middenlaan 2a)Amsterdam’s small but beautiful botanical garden. Peaceful terrace in the middle of the busy city centre, with (a.o.) great carrot cake and fresh mint tea. • Picking a concert at one of the many music venues in town. If you’re into classical music, you shouldn’t miss the concertgebouw (Centrum, Concertgebouwplein 2-6), which is known for its great acoustics (some say the best in the world…..). If you’re lucky, you can hear the famous Concertgebouw Orchestra play for free in the weekly one hour “lunch concert” series at Wednesdays. |
