TIPS JURE LC Sandra
EARLI and JURE work closely together. The members of the JURE Local Committee have soms tips for visiting Amsterdam. Here you find Sandra's tips:
FOOD • Roem (Centrum) (Prinsengracht 126) Good food, nice atmosphere, great service, and superb view. It is right across the canal from the Anne Frank house and Westerkerk and has a small terrace. Also good place for drinks, with lots of other nice places around for eating and drinking.
• Kantjil & de Tijger (Centrum) (www.kantjil.nl/ Spuistraat 291-293) Good Indonesian food, cheap menu before 7 pm, very central location. Decorated in authentic 1920’s style. • Burgermeester (Centrum) (www.burgermeester.eu/ Albert Cuypstraat 48 & Elandsgracht 180). Real quality burgers, meat, fish and veggie. Sit down or take-away. |

Next door to the newest youth hostel of Amsterdam. • Cafe Thijssen (Centrum, Brouwersgracht 107) Lively pub in the Jordaan, one of the most genuine old neighbourhoods of Amsterdam. They also serve lunch. • Cafe-restaurant Star Ferry (Centrum) (www.muziekgebouw.nl/ Piet Heinkade 1) Go here for the stunning view across the IJ, the river that separates ‘mainland’ Amsterdam from the northern part of the city. Great place to enjoy the sunset outside on the spacious terrace surrounded by water. The building is an interesting piece of contemporary architecture which also houses the theatre Muziekgebouw aan het IJ and jazz stage Bimhuis. It’s close to Central station, from where you can take a ferry to Amsterdam North. You can also eat here, although I would not recommend it |
ACTIVITIES • Rent a bike! The absolute best way to experience Amsterdam is by cycling. Bikes can be rented at just about every street corner. Find addresses at www.macbike.nl, www.bikes.nl, www.orangebike.nl, or www.yellowbike.nl. You can also take guided bicycle tours, but the greatest adventure is of course to just go and see where your bike takes you! • Vondelpark Open air theatre (Centrum) (http://www.openluchttheater.nl/) Open air theatre in the most famous park of the city (last performances the weekend before Earli). All sorts of cultural activities: music, dance, stand-up comedy, theatre. No entrance fee. There is a bar with food and drinks. • Go see a movie at Tuschinski theatre (Centrum) (www.pathe.nl/tuschinski). Old and well restored movie theatre downtown with lots of bars around the corner at Rembrandt Square. All movies (except some children’s movies) are in original language with subtitles. | |
